Good morning everyone, (how are you?) I am profoundly grateful of having the opportunity to share some words with you as an international student.
First of all, let me present myself: my name is Elena, and my Chinese name is 黄亦楠. I was born in Argentina but my parents are Chinese. Yes, I’m a 华裔. I grew up in a multilingual and a multicultural environment. Every single day I had to switch between Spanish and Chinese several times. Well… I’m a “Third-Culture Kid”or “第三文化小孩”. So, what does that mean? Let’s say, I’m not 100% identified as Chinese, which you may call the “first culture”. But at the same time, I’m not fully Argentine as well, which is the “second culture”. Then, where am I?
The answer is, I’m somewhere in the gray zone, somewhere IN BETWEEN, somewhere known as the “third culture”.
So, one of the reasons I chose to study Communication is the fact that… I always felt as if I acted as a MEDIATOR. A “midpoint” between the East and the West perhaps.
Now, if you ask me how would I define the word “COMMUNICATION”, I would say: COMMUNICATION is TO BUILD BRIDGES BETWEEN PEOPLE.
The significance of cross-cultural communication and tolerance between different societies is becoming each time more visible, and even more nowadays, considering that we are fully immersed in the era of information and mass media. And it is the BRIDGES we build between us that makes a more united global community.
As future professionals in the business of media, I believe that our duty is to facilitate and to improve everyday transmission of information in this more and more globalized and interconnected world.
Furthermore, many people asked me: Why did you choose China?
Well, to begin with, China is a blend between thousands of years of historical heritage and vibrant modern city lifestyles. This aspect will not only give me the chance to learn about the country’s development, but it will also allow me to discover more about my cultural roots, as I have always lived in Argentina.
Also, I am excited to study in such a diversified university as BFSU, known as the “Cradle of Diplomats” or “外交官的摇篮”, which undoubtedly opens the door to a pluralistic environment in a rapidly evolving nation.
Overall, I am anxious to begin this whole new adventure, and looking forward to BUILDING BRIDGES with you.
Last but not least, 非常高兴认识你们!希望大家度过一个愉快的学期!
谢谢!
